In the Tansa Valley, where many families live at subsistence level, without the means to provide adequate nutrition, malnutrition rates are even more startling – 67%. The lack of sanitation facilities is a significant problem facing local schoolchildren. In many government-aided schools, children are forced to relieve themselves in open outdoor spaces because the existing facilities are dilapidated or, in some cases, non-existent. Some 3 in 10 people worldwide lack access to safe, readily available water at home, according to a report by WHO and UNICEF.
